Description
Cinco de Mayo is a holiday stemming from a battle in 1862 between ill-equipped soldiers of Puebla against the invading French. Winning this battle was a huge feat for the locals and helped to bolster a national pride and unity during difficult times for Mexico. A strategic theory also speculates that the French had a future goal of working from a base in Mexico to support the Confederates during the U.S. Civil War in order to weaken the growing United States.
Apparently this holiday is not celebrated throughout Mexico, though it has become an annual celebration of Mexican culture around the United States.
